Position Overview

Join XTEL as an Ontology Engineer to help build the foundational semantic layer for our AI-driven systems. Contribute to the design of ontologies and semantic rules that enable intelligent search, interaction, and integration with LLM-based agents. Work closely with AI and product teams to expose and utilize knowledge graphs, ensuring semantic consistency and enabling advanced capabilities. This is a hands-on role with room for growth, impact, and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

As an Ontology Engineer at XTEL, you will:

• Help define and maintain ontologies and semantic rules that power intelligent applications.

• Support the design and implementation of the semantic layer enabling search, reasoning, and orchestration for AI agents.

• Work with tools and frameworks to build, expose, and query knowledge graphs.

• Collaborate with AI Engineers, product managers, and developers to align ontologies with business and technical requirements.

• Ensure high-quality, reusable, and scalable semantic models aligned with best practices in ontology engineering.

• Stay updated on semantic web technologies, reasoning engines, and trends in knowledge representation.

• Participate in technical discussions and contribute to the evolution of our semantic architecture.

Qualifications

A great candidate will have:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.

• 3–5 years of experience in ontology engineering, knowledge graphs, or semantic technologies.

• Familiarity with ontology modeling languages and tools (e.g., OWL, RDF, Protégé, SHACL).

• Experience using or exposing knowledge graphs with tools like GraphDB, Stardog, Ontotext, or similar platforms.

• Understanding of how ontologies enable search, interaction, and reasoning in AI systems.

• Solid collaboration and communication skills in cross-functional teams.

• Advanced proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have:

• Experience integrating ontologies with LLMs or AI agents.

• Exposure to SPARQL or similar query languages.

• Familiarity with hybrid reasoning systems or neuro-symbolic AI.

Location Preferences:

Our headquarters is located in Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna, and we offer hybrid work arrangements. While we prioritize candidates who are based in Bologna and the surrounding areas for hybrid work, we are open to considering other options on a case-by-case basis.
